The client needed accurate volume measurements of coal and limestone stockpiles for inventory management and operational planning. Proposed Solution

We deployed high-resolution 3D laser scanning using FARO Focus technology to capture complete point cloud data of coal and limestone stockpiles. The scanned data was processed through FARO SCENE software to generate accurate 3D models and calculate precise volume measurements. This non-contact scanning methodology provided reliable volumetric data without requiring physical access to hazardous stockpile areas.

Challenges Faced

Coal dust in the air significantly impacted scanner optics and data quality, requiring frequent equipment cleaning and specialized protective measures. Extreme ambient temperatures at the site challenged equipment performance and operator safety during extended scanning sessions. The steep and unstable slopes of the stockpiles made it extremely difficult and risky to position and carry scanning equipment to required measurement points.
