Business Requirement

The client needed accurate technical drawings of their existing blast furnace and boiler exhaust pipe systems for maintenance, modification, and compliance documentation. Precise as-built models were required to understand complex geometries, identify potential upgrade opportunities, and support future maintenance planning. Detailed drawings would enable engineers to plan modifications and ensure accurate spare part procurement for critical equipment.

Proposed Solution

We performed comprehensive 3D laser scanning of the blast furnace and boiler exhaust pipe systems using FARO Focus technology to capture precise structural and dimensional data. The extensive point cloud data was processed through FARO SCENE to generate detailed as-built 3D models and technical drawings suitable for engineering analysis and maintenance applications. These comprehensive deliverables provided accurate baseline documentation for equipment management and future modification planning.

Challenges Faced

Extreme temperatures near the blast furnace created severe operational challenges, requiring continuous 29-hour scanning sessions using dual FARO Focus scanners to complete the project efficiently. Excessive airborne dust from steel production operations severely impacted scanner optics and data quality, necessitating frequent cleaning and protective measures throughout scanning operations. Equipment thermal management was critical—scanners regularly overheated and required transport to cool locations for temperature recovery to maintain optimal performance and data accuracy.

Outcome

Accurate technical drawings of blast furnace and boiler exhaust systems enabling informed maintenance decisions and efficient future modifications.
